1Password Pro – iPad edition – worth the upgrade?

1 password proLast year, I wrote a post on managing passwords on your Mac, in it I talked about 1Password which at the time was available for iPhone and Mac OSX. Agile Web Solutions, the authors have recently released a new version titled 1Password Pro.

Now if you’ve come to this post from google you may have been searching for the same information I was, ie what is the difference between 1Password and 1Password Pro?

I think they could probably do a better job of making it more obvious in the iTunes store but the difference is that the pro version has an interface for iPad and iPhone. More apps are appearing like this that, 1 app that has an interface for both devices.

At first I was a bit put off by this, I’ve already paid for the iPhone version do I really need to cough up another $8.99 (Australian iTunes store) for this?

Ultimately I think yes it is worth it. I live in 1Password all day when working. I had been using the iPhone version on my iPad and while it worked it was just not pretty to look at. As with other apps that are only iPhone apps, it sat lonely in the middle of the screen, yes you could double size it and it would open the site login etc.. in the built in web browser but then you’re stuck viewing the site in less then perfect conditions.

Over the past few days I had resorted to opening 1Password copy and pasting the details and then logging into the site in Safari on the iPad, which is just a bit awkward.

So yes, nearly nine bucks for the privilege of viewing in iPad splendour but when you use it all the time I think the value is there.

  1. The guys from Agile sent me this URL via twitter, a nice table that does show the difference between the versions as well as information on up coming features.

  2. $8.99?

It’s now $17.99 Australian for the Pro version. What a confusing scenario. As someone who couldn’t run my MacBook Pro without 1Password installed, it’s a really confusing scenario trying to get passwords on the iPad.

  3. Richard – yup agree with you – they could make it a whole lot easier.

I think it was on special at 8.99 when I wrote the post.

    Still, it’s a great tool
