AirPlay: beyond the iPod app

AirPlay in the iPod app

Our recent post on AirPlay covered probably one of the most commonly used applications of AirPlay, playing music from your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and streaming it to other speakers you have on an apple airport express base station.

Since this has been introduced in iOS 4.2 I’ve have found some other great apps that make use of AirPlay that also have a great practical use.

I’ve written here about Tune in Radio a while back, it’s a great little app that allows you to stream radio stations over wifi and your 3G data. I was happy to see after the 4.2 upgrade that apps like this also have support for AirPlay.

Now, I can choose a radio station from the list of hundreds and stream it to various rooms in the house from iPhone or iPad – a really practical use of both the radio app and AirPlay.

Another favourite is Eye TV, it’s a universal app for both iPhone and iPad and yes works with AirPlay, so you can watch content on your iDevice and instead of listening on the device stream it to other speakers you may have setup.

It’s all the same method, in any app that produces sound content like these look for the little AirPlay logo (the square and triangle together) and your available speakers are displayed. Below are some screen shots of this in Tune in Radio.

What is the latest? Why does it seem airplay has been yanked from the tunein app, (as well as youtube and others)? I was hoping to set things up at home to take advantage of this seemingly great quick fix for multiple speakers but now I’m not sure. Will we see a return of airplay usable apps or not? Seems if it is limited to itunes then airplay is no great advance on what we were getting with the airport express network to begin with. Please respond.

James,

I actually had not noticed it missing, having not used it in the past week or so. After your comment I check out my iPhone 4 and you’re correct, the AirPlay option is not there.

Funny thing is the same version of the app on iPad the AirPlay option _is_ there.

I don’t think this will be a permanent thing, in fact I recently read a post saying that more apps, particularly video apps are going to support AirPlay.

Thanks for the response. By way of an update, Airplay for third party apps is back! I checked this morning and found Airplay to network-ed speakers was available for the tunein and pandora apps. Fantastic.
