Let’s say you have a few computers in your house and you love to listen to music. But when you put your music on iTunes on your computer, you are somewhat confined to your music on that computer. Well, that problem has been solved with the evolution of iTunes enabling something called Home Sharing. Essentially you can share your music from your home computer to other computers inside of your home, 5 of them to be exact. This is a great service to have. This post will be about setting it up and using Home Sharing.
The first thing you are going to want to do is enable Home Sharing on a single computer. In order to do this you are going to want to open iTunes. Then you are going to want to click on the “Advanced” tab, then click on “Turn on Home Sharing”.
You then will be asked to put in your iTunes username and password. This will indicate which account will be shared throughout the other computers.
Then when you are done with this, Home Sharing will now be enabled on your computer and for other computers in your house. What you have to remember is that if you want to use Home Sharing on other computers, they have to be on the same network that you are on. So you don’t necessarily have to be at home, per se, in order to use this. You can be in an office as well.
When you want to use Home Sharing from another computer, not only do you need to make sure you are on the same network as the computer that is sharing, you also need to sign in under that same account in iTunes. So for example, if I am the one that enabled Home Sharing on my computer, if I want to play my music on my wife’s computer, I need to make sure I log in to her iTunes with my log in information. You will then see a Shared tab on the left. From here you can now have access to your music, videos, apps, etc.
Home Sharing is a great feature to have. One other cool feature is that if you have an Apple TV, you can enable Home Sharing with that as well and then you can get a video that you downloaded on iTunes on your computer and you can now play it on your Apple TV. So there you have, it. Hope you enjoy using Home Sharing.
