iOS5 Multitouch gestures – iPad

by Peter on October 13, 2011

in Apple

There is a lot of information floating around this week about iOS5 and all of the cool new features. For some summaries see our previous post here.

One very cool item that hasn’t had much attention is the multi-touch gestures available in iPad.

These four or even five finger gestures can be turned on in the general settings of system preferences.

Swiping up with four fingers now reveals the multi-tasking bar, previously you had to double push the home button to see this – very nice.

When you are inside an application swiping with four fingers from left to right will move to the next application – again very nice.

Finally when you would like to move to the home screen, pinch with five fingers will take you right there.

The screen shot below shows where to turn these gestures on.

Why no app switching on the iPhone?

Michael, you know I wan’t sure about this myself, having only had my hands of iOS 5 for a couple of hours. I tried it but yeah it doesn’t seem to have an equivalent in the iPhone – I think we have to be happy to double tap the home button to get to the multi-tasking.

I have an iPad 1, and there is no multi-tasking gestures in the Settings/General menu. Multi-tasking worked fine on my iPad 1 with 4.3. once you get used to it, it is hard to be without it!!

Teri, yeah I’ve read quite a few people with original iPads a bit miffed about that. Hard to understand why Apple would not make it available to both iPads…

As a matter of fact is simple to understand why apple cut off the multi-tasking gestures from Ipad 1, increase their forecast, giving one new reason to rollout from Ipad 1 to Ipad 2… but release dates from ipad 1 and 2 were too short… so I´ll wait IPAD 3…

As a matter of fact, you can reenable multi-touch gestures on the iPad 1. You’ll need to download an jailbreaking app called RedsnOw. You can find it here: http://www.justmobilephone.com/download-redsnow/ You won’t actually be jailbreaking, you’ll just need to get to the last screen in the app where it lets you enable multi-touch gestures. I’ve done so with my ipad and iphone.

Update on this.

iOS 5.0.1 is out now and it add back multitouch gestures for the original iPad.

Good news for original iPad owners!
