What is WPS and does WPS work with Airport base stations?

I must admit I am new to WPS, I’ve had a wireless network around the house and office for many years now, I’ve connected multiple airport devices together to expand a network but I had not had a device that used WPS.

Then came the new Philips AirPlay speaker. After playing it for 2 days I just could not get it to connect to the network, following the manual instructions it just wouldn’t play.

I did notice that it supported WPS, I had a vague idea what it was, so googled that and airport and was surprised to fine that airports, both express and extreme version have support for it.

And, it’s easy!

The two screen shots here tell the story. Connect to the airport then from the ‘basestation’ menu and then choose ‘add wireless clients’, then follow the steps presented. I chose to just use the ‘first connection’ method and it just worked.

So if you’ve arrived at the post wondering if AirPorts support WPS – the short answer is yes.

Comments

  1. Support appears to have been dropped from the newer versions of Airport Utility, FYI.

  2. Yes, because WPS is very insecure.
